Practice
Patrick J. Flaherty began practicing with Cooney,
Scully and Dowling in 1959, and became a partner
in 1964. Since that time, he has handled a wide
range of matters involving diverse areas of law,
with a particular emphasis on trial work. Counsel
and legal advisor to the Sisters of Mercy of Connecticut
for over 45 years, he has also served in that
capacity, at various times, for the Hartford Roman
Catholic Diocesan Corporation and many of its
affiliated organizations. Mr. Flaherty has had
broad experience in probate and estate matters,
commercial and residential real estate, contracts,
domestic relations, zoning, and minor criminal
matters. As lead counsel, he has tried to conclusion
well over 100 cases, both court and jury, state
and federal, with an exceptional record of success.
He has had extensive appellate experience adjunctive
to that trial practice.
Professional
Experience
His trial practice has involved railroad and FELA
defense, legal and accountants professional liability
defense, civil rights defense, architects and
engineers defense, asbestos products defense,
beauty parlor and cosmetic products defense, insurance
coverage disputes, fire injury and damage disputes,
assault and battery claims, malicious prosecution
claims, numerous divorce trials, and hundreds
of general liability automobile and product liability
cases, both plaintiff and defendant, several of
which involved fatalities.
Professional
and Civic Activities
Mr. Flaherty is a member of the National Association
of Railroad Trial Counsel, serving as Vice President
in 1995, a member of its Executive Committee since
1991, and a speaker at its national meetings.
He is a former member of the National Association
of College and University Attorneys. He is an
emeritus member of the Oliver Ellsworth Inn of
Court, having served for a number of years as
its membership chairperson. He is a member of
the Hartford County, New Britain, State of Connecticut,
and American Bar Associations.
Mr. Flaherty has served as Class Agent for most
of the years since his graduation from Kingswood
School in 1951 and in 1966 as President of the
Old Boys Association and alumni member of its
Board of Trustees. He is a past member of the
Town of Newington Board of Tax Review and was
a trustee of St. Mary Home from 1968 to 1994.
He entered the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve in 1958
and retired at the rank of Lieutenant in 1966.
